Human Resource Management 2e is an Australian adaptation of the best-selling US text by Gary Dessler. It contains a wealth of material on the theory and practice of HRM in Australia. In this second edition the Australian authors have maintained the highly readable writing style of past editions, and have continued to draw on engaging material from practitioner experience, academic literature and current media sources to shed light on the importance of HRM as a profession in the 21st century.

PEDAGOGICAL FEATURES

Within each chapter
- Chapter Outline and Learning Objectives. A list at the start of the chapter introduces readers to the important topics covered in the chapter and clearly states what readers can expect to learn after studying the chapter.
- Opening Vignettes. Each chapter begins with a story or issue that contextualises the topic. It may be a fictionalised case specifically written for the chapter or an article from the media selected for its relevance. A number of these emphasise the work of particular individuals working in HRM.
- Chapter boxes. There are two types of boxes in the text:

The High Performance Organisation. This box focuses on an organisation where HR practice might serve as a model for organisations seeking improved performance.

Small and Medium Enterprises. This box serves to remind us that good practice in HR is not just the preserve of large corporations.

It can also present issues with special relevance to smaller businesses.
- Special Icons.

One Icon indicates internet sites of special interest to a particular topic. A Making Connections Icon indicates material in other chapters with relevance to a topic.
- Key Terms.

These are shown in bold throughout the text where they first appear and a convenient short definition appears in the margin. The key terms are listed at the end of each chapter and all terms are listed alphabetically in the glossary at the end of the book.

At the end of each chapter
- Point/Counterpoint boxes. These boxes deal with an issue or controversy affecting HRM in the area covered in the chapter.
- Summary.

At the end of each chapter a summary, in point form, outlines the main topics of the chapter.
- Review Questions.

These questions are designed to help students evaluate their success in achieving the learning objectives of the chapter.
